How much money does Gothamchess, the internet's chess teacher, make?

Chess has historically been a sport that pays very little. The first person that usually comes to mind when talking about Chess Profits would be Hikaru Nakumara. However, during the Chess Boom, another person rose to fame. The person, is Levy Rozman, aka GothamChess!

YOUTUBE

Firstly, let’s account for the place most of you have met Gothamchess, which is YouTube. Levy currently has 4.11 Million subs, currently on YouTube. With an average of 63 Million views a month, Levy Rozman is the biggest YouTube Channel in the Chess Niche.

According to SocialBlade, these view counts would generally result in $15.8K - $252.3K per month, depending on how the ads do. With this, we can average it out to $134K a month, or $1.6M a year. This is even more than Hikaru, who, on average, makes $338.7K per month from YouTube.

For some comparison on YouTube profit:

  • BotezLive - $378,150

  • Chessbrah - $27,100

  • KDlearns Chess - $40,100

  • Eric Rosen - $44,250

TWITCH

However, some of you will know that Gothamchess doesn’t just have a YouTube Channel, but also a Twitch channel. According to https://twitch.pages.dev/earnings/gothamchess/, GothamChess makes $424,505, during the 26-month period from Aug 2019 to Sep 2021.

Doing some basic maths, we can turn this into an average of $16,327 per month, which is, once again, an incredibly huge number. So far, by adding on to the total, he would be making $353,000 a month, or $4,236,000 a year, from both YouTube and Twitch.

CONCLUSION

While yes, GothamChess also has other revenue streams, such as his website Chessly, however, since there is no data on them, I have concluded that these are insignificant numbers in the grand scheme of things. Therefore, we can conclude that Gothamchess makes $353,000 per month!

So, did this number surprise you in any way? Please answer in the comments section below!

The History of FIDE's Misconduct: The shocking truth about the World Chess Federation!!

Federation Internationale des Echecs, better known as FIDE is the governing body for everything regarding chess all over the world. Behind a nearly spotless reputation, FIDE has been the governing body of chess for over 99 years.

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about FIDE’s activity. If you’re struggling to keep up with what’s currently happening, we’re here to help you out. Continue reading to find out the history of FIDE’s most TOXIC actions.

SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

Due to this being a sensitive topic, any players mentioned will not be named. There are many high-profile cases, with multiple players being accused of sexual misconduct. The problem comes when these players are still able to play in FIDE tournaments as well as have jobs in FIDE. If you’d like to read more about this, here’s the article from Lichess.

FIDE has released an article about these players’ toxic behaviour, however, they used very vague vocabulary and did not address the problem. This then resulted in huge amounts of backlash, from both Social Media and the other chess federations (USCF, ECF, etc)

THE BANNING OF TRANSGENDER PLAYERS

1 week ago, FIDE published a paper, stating that ALL Transgender players are banned from playing competitive chess in their gendered category. However, the laws are more extensive than that. The chess player must have their gender in their ID, which means they have to be 18 or higher. And even after that, you’d have to wait for 2 years before you’d get to play.

Once again, the Chess Social Media Community protested against this change. The laws were obviously ridiculous, therefore, USCF, ECF, and other chess federations did not follow this rule, however, it does not mean this law still has a significant effect.

HOW CAN WE GET THINGS CHANGED

This is obviously a huge issue, so, how can we get things changed?

  • Social Media:

    • You can comment, like and share posts on Social Media made by bigger influencers.

    • Or you can post about the bigger problem. Together, we can change these policies.

  • Emailing FIDE Higherups and Employees

    • By Emailing them, you can make your voice heard, which can impact the future of FIDE!

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER

Please do not be rude, or mean to any FIDE employee or member, because that ultimately does not help our cause. Be very respectful; show your concern from a space of love, not a space of hate.

Forgotten History: The Modern War of Chess AI!

This is part 2 of the series, talking about the Story of Chess AI. The previous blog posts talked about the pre-2000 Era, where IBM’s Deep Blue dominated Humanity. However, in 2008, Tord Romstad, Marco Costalba, and Joona Kiisk created something. And that thing is called Stockfish!

So let’s dive right into it!

THE CREATION OF STOCKFISH

In 2004, a college student named Tord Romstad created an open-source chess bot called Glaurung. The bot never exploded into the competitive scene, however, it laid the framework for the eventual creation of Stockfish.

4 years later, two more college students came to the team and created what would be known now as Stockfish. Stockfish was especially powerful because it was far more aggressive than any other chess engine, considering the most forcing options first.

When it was first created, it wasn’t the most powerful chess engine by any means, being ranked 3rd or 4th when it was first created. However, due to its forcing options, this aggressive chess engine very quickly became the most potent chess engine objectively. But for how long?

Google’s War Against Stockfish

The previous chess bots had learned to play and master chess by using loads of human data. But Google’s approach was very different. Google had created a neural network, where their robot, Alphazero played millions of games against itself.

This allowed it to improve at exponential speed. This brand new neural network was so powerful that it could defeat the legendary Stockfish, which had been champion for over 6 years in a row, with just 9 hours of training. The legendary games between Stockfish and Alphazero infamously ended with Alphazero winning 99% of the games.

Alphazero was interesting as it hugely favoured activity over material, sacrificing multiple pawns, sometimes multiple pieces to gain a colossal activity advantage. Sadly, AlphaZero’s development was stopped by Google, and once again, Stockfish became the reigning champion.

LEELA CHESS ZERO

Google’s Bot, AlphaZero became such an excellent success that Gian-Carlo Pascutto used AlphaZero’s reinforced learning to create Leela Chess Zero (LCZero). LCZero was first announced in January 2018, and within a few months, it had already reached the Grandmaster level.

LCZero, unfortunately, did not have as big of a legacy as AlphaZero, however, in 2019, it won the Top Chess Engine Championship, scoring significantly higher than Stockfish. LcZero was known to have exceptional strength in the Fischer Random category.

THE PRESENT + THE FUTURE

Recently, Chess.com released their own chess engine, named Torch, which is currently the second most powerful Chess Engine. It is unknown currently whether Stockfish will be dethroned or not, but, we can say that Stockfish has lamented its legacy, as one of the Greatest Chess Bots in History.
